Robot Vacuum Buying Guide 2026:
What Really Matters?

Before you buy a robot vacuum with a self-emptying station, you should know these differences. Our guide explains suction power, navigation, mopping technologies and station functions in plain language – so you don't pay for features you don't actually need.

Suction Power – How Much Pa Do You Really Need?

Suction power, stated in pascal (Pa), is the most commonly advertised metric for robot vacuums, but it alone says little about the actual cleaning result. Brush design, airflow and the size of the intake opening play at least as important a role.

18,000 Pa (ECOVACS DEEBOT T80 OMNI)

A solid figure for the upper mid-range, which the manufacturer says should offer sufficient suction power for the vast majority of hard floors and low-pile carpets.

19,000–22,000 Pa (Mova P50 Pro Ultra, Roborock Saros 10R)

A moderate step up that can be noticeable in practice mainly on high-pile carpets or with larger amounts of pet hair.

30,000 Pa (Dreame Matrix10 Ultra)

Currently the highest figure among the models compared here, positioned accordingly in the flagship price segment. For standard households, this figure is often more of a marketing argument than a necessary requirement.

Recommendation by Household Smaller flat, mostly hard floor: 8,000–15,000 Pa is usually completely sufficient. Several pets or high-pile carpets: aim for at least 18,000–20,000 Pa. Very large floor area and heavy soiling: 25,000 Pa and up makes sense.

Mopping Technologies: Roller vs. Pad

The mopping function shows the clearest technical differences between the models:

Rotating Self-Cleaning Roller (ECOVACS OZMO ROLLER)

A rotating roller (up to 200 rpm) is continuously rinsed with fresh water instead of spreading dirty water. The high contact pressure (3,700 Pa according to the manufacturer) is designed to also loosen dried-on stains.

Multi-Mop Swap System (Dreame)

The Matrix10 Ultra automatically swaps mop pads per room, complemented by a compartment for up to three different cleaning solutions – practical for different floor coverings in the same household.

Hot-Water Washing up to 75 °C (ECOVACS, Mova)

Both the T80 OMNI and the P50 Pro Ultra offer temperature-controlled mop washing up to 75 °C in the station – hotter water is designed to loosen stubborn dirt better than cold water.

Which System Suits Whom? Many different floor coverings and rooms: a multi-mop swap station (Dreame) saves manual effort. Focus on stubborn stains over a manageable area: a roller system with high contact pressure (ECOVACS, similarly found in premium models from other brands too) is usually sufficient.

ECOVACS vs. Roborock vs. Dreame vs. Mova – the Honest Brand Comparison

ECOVACS (China)

Strengths: well-thought-out OMNI station with hot-water washing and hot-air drying, very good value for money when available, an established brand with a broad product portfolio. Weaknesses: unavailable at both the manufacturer and Amazon.de at the time of research, a large gap between RRP and market price makes price assessment difficult.

Roborock (China)

Strengths: an exceptionally flat build (7.98 cm) for low furniture, a mature StarSight navigation system, 22,000 Pa suction power. Weaknesses: the lowest Amazon rating in the direct comparison at 4.0★, a significantly higher price than the ECOVACS market price.

Dreame (China)

Strengths: the highest suction power in the comparison at 30,000 Pa, an innovative multi-mop swap station with multiple cleaning solutions, broad object recognition. Weaknesses: at 1,199 € clearly the most expensive model in the comparison.

Mova (China, a brand closely tied to Dreame's parent company)

Strengths: actually available at the time of research, similar price level to the ECOVACS market price, an extendable side brush for better edge cleaning. Weaknesses: a somewhat less well-known brand, less media test coverage than the other three manufacturers.

Care & Maintenance in Everyday Use

Even the most low-maintenance stations still need some regular care:

  • Refill the station's clean water tank regularly (on the T80 OMNI: 3.7 L capacity)
  • Empty the dirty water tank regularly to prevent odours (on the T80 OMNI: 2.2 L)
  • Replace or empty the station's dust bag or container at the intervals specified by the manufacturer
  • Occasionally manually remove hair and lint from brushes and the roller despite the anti-tangle system
  • Regularly clean dust off sensors and the camera with a dry cloth to avoid navigation errors
  • Install firmware and app updates promptly, as manufacturers continuously improve navigation and detection algorithms

FAQ: Buying a Robot Vacuum

For ordinary households with hard floors and low-pile carpets, 5,000–8,000 Pa is usually more than enough in practice. Figures like the 18,000 Pa of the ECOVACS DEEBOT T80 OMNI, or even the 30,000 Pa of the Dreame Matrix10 Ultra, are mainly relevant for households with pet hair, high-pile carpets or very large floor areas. Important: Pa figures from different manufacturers are not always measured to identical standards and are therefore only partially comparable.
A self-emptying station automatically empties the robot's dustbin into a much larger bag or container in the station after every cleaning run. This reduces manual maintenance to just a few times a month instead of after every run. Models like the ECOVACS DEEBOT T80 OMNI go even further, also handling the washing and drying of the mop roller in the station.
LiDAR and dToF laser systems (as used in the T80 OMNI) emit light pulses and calculate a precise map of the surroundings from the time of flight – this works reliably even in complete darkness. Pure camera navigation depends on sufficient ambient light but is often used in addition for object detection (as with the T80 OMNI's AIVI 3D technology, which combines laser navigation with AI camera recognition).
According to manufacturer claims, rotating roller systems like OZMO ROLLER (ECOVACS) pick up dirty water better than they spread it, thanks to continuous self-cleaning with fresh water, and additionally loosen stains mechanically through rotation. Vibrating flat mops are usually simpler and cheaper to build but, according to many manufacturer specifications, achieve lower contact pressure. Roller systems tend to be considered more capable for heavily soiled floors with stains.
Most current flagship models, including the T80 OMNI, advertise automatic detection with several selectable modes (e.g. vacuum-only on carpet, complete avoidance, or crossing without cleaning). Independent, standardised testing of detection accuracy across different carpet types is barely available publicly for most models in this price segment – on very dark or heavily patterned carpets, misclassifications can occur in individual cases.
It is common among Chinese robot vacuum manufacturers to launch a model at a high recommended retail price and then significantly lower the actual selling price through discount campaigns, coupons and seasonal offers. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T80 OMNI, with an RRP of 1,099 € against a researched market price of from approx. 399 €, is an example of this. When comparing prices, always go by the current offer price across multiple retailers, not the RRP.
Manufacturers like ECOVACS advertise claims such as "up to 150 days low-maintenance". This usually refers to the interval before the large dust bag or container in the station needs to be emptied – not that no care is needed at all. Clean water still needs to be topped up regularly, the dirty water tank emptied regularly, and the mop roller or brushes occasionally freed of hair, even though anti-tangle systems are designed to make this less often necessary.
That depends on your needs: the Dreame Matrix10 Ultra's multi-mop swap station and nearly double the suction power are mainly of interest for large households with multiple floor coverings or heavy soiling (e.g. several pets). For an average household, the features of a well-available, cheaper model like the ECOVACS DEEBOT T80 OMNI or the Mova P50 Pro Ultra should be sufficient in practice.
