Grass Trimmer Buying Guide 2026:
What Really Matters?

Before buying a grass trimmer, you should know these criteria. Our guide helps you make the right choice – without wasting money.

1. Brush Cutter, Grass Trimmer or Strimmer?

These three terms are often confused. Here are the most important differences:

Grass Trimmer

A grass trimmer (also edge trimmer) is light and suitable for maintaining lawn edges and small green areas. It works almost exclusively with nylon line and has a straight or curved shaft. Ideal for gardens up to approx. 400 m².

Brush Cutter

A true brush cutter has a straight shaft and can use both line and blades (plastic or metal). It is more powerful and suitable for denser vegetation like weeds, nettles or thin undergrowth. Recommended for gardens over 500 m² with uneven ground.

Strimmer / Grass Hook

A strimmer is essentially the same as a brush cutter, often with a slightly stronger motor. The term is often used interchangeably, but refers to a version with hard blade or metal blade for very dense grass, reeds or young shrubs.

Our Tip For most home users a grass trimmer with line is sufficient. Only those with uneven terrain or very dense vegetation need a true brush cutter with blade option.

2. Battery, Petrol or Corded?

Cordless Trimmers – The Best Choice for Most

  • Instant start, no pulling needed
  • No fuel mixing
  • Significantly quieter than petrol models
  • No emissions during use
  • Low maintenance (no oil changes, no carburettor)
  • Batteries can be shared with other tools of the same brand
Note Cordless trimmers have limited runtime (20–60 minutes depending on battery capacity). For very large areas over 2,000 m² a second battery or a petrol device may be useful.

Petrol Trimmers

  • Unlimited runtime (only limited by tank size)
  • Highest power for professional use
  • More expensive to buy and maintain
  • Loud and emission-intensive
  • Not recommended for home users

Corded Trimmers

  • Inexpensive to buy
  • No battery runtime limits
  • Cable restricts freedom of movement
  • Only recommended for small gardens

3. The 6 Most Important Buying Criteria

1. Battery Voltage and System

It is best to choose a trimmer whose battery system you already use or plan to expand. 18V is sufficient for small gardens, 36V (as Twin-Pack with two 18V batteries or as its own system) offers more power for larger areas.

2. Cutting Width

For small gardens 24–28 cm is enough. For medium-sized gardens we recommend 30 cm. For larger areas 33–35 cm saves considerably more time.

3. Weight

The weight of the device (without battery) is crucial for comfort. Under 2 kg is ideal for longer sessions. Heavier devices tire faster – for larger models a shoulder strap is useful.

4. Motor Type: Brushed vs. Brushless

Entry-level models use brushed motors – cheaper but higher wear. Brushless motors are more efficient, more durable and get more runtime from the battery. Clearly preferable for professional use.

5. Line Feed

Manual feed (tapping on the ground) is cheaper but less convenient. Semi-automatic or automatic feed via button is more comfortable and recommended for regular use.

6. Ergonomics and Accessories

Look for an adjustable shaft (for users of different heights), a rotating motor head (for edge trimming) and ideally a flower guard (plant protection). Also check whether replacement accessories (line spools) are available cheaply.

4. Care and Maintenance

After Each Use

  • Remove grass clippings and dirt from the guard
  • Check line head for line length
  • Remove battery and store in a cool place (not below 0 °C)

Seasonal Maintenance

  • Clean line head and spool
  • Store battery at 50–80 % charge over winter
  • Clean ventilation slots on the motor
  • Check screws and connections for tight fit
Tip for Line Selection Always use the recommended line diameter. Too thick a line strains the motor, too thin a line breaks too often. For Einhell trimmers 1.6 mm (18V models) or 2.0 mm (36V models) is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most important questions about buying a grass trimmer – answered briefly and clearly.

A grass trimmer (also edge trimmer) is lightweight and suitable for maintaining lawn edges and small green areas. It works almost exclusively with nylon line and has a straight or curved shaft. Ideal for gardens up to approx. 400 m². A brush cutter is more powerful and can use both line and blades (plastic or metal) to cut denser vegetation like weeds, brambles or young shrubs. Many cordless devices combine both functions.
Battery runtime depends heavily on the battery (capacity in Ah), workload and the device. An 18V trimmer with a 2 Ah battery typically manages 20–35 minutes under normal load. With a 4 Ah battery the runtime doubles accordingly. 36V models with two batteries have correspondingly longer runtimes but also consume more energy under load.
For small gardens and pure edge trimming 24–28 cm is sufficient. For medium-sized gardens 30 cm is optimal. For large areas from 800 m² models with 33–35 cm cutting width are recommended – they work faster as fewer passes are needed. Note: a larger cutting width generally means more weight and higher battery consumption.
Yes, Einhell has established itself as one of the best value-for-money brands in cordless garden tools. The Power X-Change system allows sharing one battery with over 80 different devices. The GE-CT and GP-CT trimmers regularly receive very good ratings on Amazon (4.3–4.6 stars) and impress with durability and performance.
This depends on the model. Cheaper models have manual line advancement (tap briefly on the ground). Higher-quality models offer a semi-automatic feed (lift briefly and tap) or a fully automatic feed at the push of a button (like Einhell's E-button system). For comfortable work we recommend models with automatic line feed.
For most home users cordless trimmers are clearly advantageous: no mixing of fuel, instant start, quieter, emission-free and lower maintenance. Petrol trimmers are only recommended for very large areas (over 3,000 m²), very dense undergrowth or when there is no power source nearby for charging.
A brushless motor (brushless DC motor) has no mechanical carbon brushes that contact the rotor. This means: less wear, lower heat generation, higher efficiency (up to 30% more runtime from the same battery) and a significantly longer lifespan. At Einhell brushless motors are found in the GP series (PurePOWER BL).
Cordless trimmers are significantly quieter than petrol models, but for longer sessions (over 30 minutes) we recommend light hearing protection. Cordless grass trimmers typically reach 85–92 dB(A) – this is in the range where hearing protection is sensible with prolonged exposure. With petrol trimmers hearing protection is essential.
