Coleman Convoy 65QT Wheeled in our test
The Convoy 65QT is the model that is regarded as a classic cooler box in Germany: 66 litres total volume, thick PU full-foam insulation in body and lid, and up to five days of cooling time according to the manufacturer. On top of that come two wheels, a telescopic handle, cup holders in the lid, a moulded-in bottle opener and a water drain. The anthracite body is more UV-stable than the light Xtreme series, but Coleman also specifies no UV protection for the Convoy.
The reference point of the mid-range
If you ask which cooler box is the most widespread in Germany, you almost always end up at the Convoy series. The 65QT version is the best-selling variant: 66 litres total volume, at 7.8 kg the heaviest device in our test and with around 250 Amazon reviews the best-documented product in this list.
The price range is strikingly broad here: idealo lists 24 offers from 150 to 248 euros, Amazon lists the model for around 165 euros, and the manufacturer itself currently has it sold out at a list price of 225 euros. Anyone buying it as a new Campingaz customer therefore pays almost 100 euros more than the market.
Five days of cooling compared
The insulation is thicker than in the Xtreme series: a full PU foam layer in body and lid. Coleman claims up to five days with ice. Compared with the Xtreme Wheeled 50QT that is one day more at a significantly larger volume – the reason why the Convoy so often wins in the shops despite its higher price.
There is still a gap to the YETI Roadie 24. The YETI is the only box in our test with a hard shell that is open at the bottom and filled via injection-moulded PU. In practice that means: the Convoy is the sensible choice, the YETI the choice for when the box also has to look good on display.
Features that make the difference
The lid offers more than most competitors: four cup holders, a moulded-in bottle opener and a water drain that lets condensation run off. On top of that, two wheels, a telescopic handle and rope handles. If you regularly wheel the box alone from the car and back, the telescopic handle set is not a decorative extra but the reason the concept works.
The flip lid is fitted with stainless-steel hinges and can be placed on its side. Coleman does not state a maximum seating load for the Convoy – unlike the Xtreme series, for which 113 kg is specified.
Weight and UV resistance
7.8 kg is normal for a 66-litre box, but noticeably more than the 6.1 kg of the Xtreme. Anyone dragging it over soft forest floor will feel the wheels – for car parks, yards and festival grounds it is exactly the right solution.
Coleman specifies no UV protection for the Convoy series either, but the surface is anthracite rather than white and therefore noticeably less prone to fading. Anyone leaving the box outside permanently should still use a cover.
Verdict
The Convoy 65QT is the cooler box we recommend without reservation if the budget sits at 150 to 180 euros. It offers the best ratio of volume, insulation and features, is widely available and is well documented on Amazon with over 250 reviews.
Under 100 euros the Xtreme Wheeled 50QT is the better buy, above 200 euros the YETI Roadie 24. The Convoy 65QT is the sensible middle ground.
