Coleman Xtreme Wheeled 50QT in our test
The Coleman Xtreme Wheeled 50QT is the cheapest box in our test and the only one available for under 100 euros. The HDPE body is fully insulated with PU foam, and the manufacturer claims it holds ice for up to four days. Two large wheels and the extendable telescopic handle turn it into a cooler box you can take to the beach or a festival. The lid is rated for 113 kg and doubles as a seat, and four recessed drink holders are moulded into it.
Four days of ice retention – what the manufacturer really means
With the Xtreme Wheeled 50QT, Coleman claims up to four days of cooling. What is meant is that an ice-filled compartment stays below 0 °C for several days. For everyday camping that translates to: if you pack the box the evening before and still expect chilled drinks and a portion of meat on day two, you are on the safe side. What is not meant is constant cooling to exactly 4 °C over 96 hours – the insulation is not designed for that.
idealo lists the box at around five days in its own test, the manufacturer states four days. We use the more conservative manufacturer figure throughout, because it is the more reliable one in practice.
Wheels and telescopic handle – the difference to the market
The reason the Xtreme Wheeled is comparatively expensive despite its plastic body is the two large wheels and the extendable telescopic handle. On car parks at the beach or on the walk from the car to the pitch, the weight of 6.1 kg becomes largely irrelevant – you pull the box. With most competitors in this price range you have to carry the cooler box sideways instead.
On tarmac and cobblestones the two wheels are not what you would expect them to be on soft grass. Despite the wheels, the box is not suitable for forest trails.
Interior space, bottles and drainage
The interior measures 50 × 33 × 41 cm. According to the manufacturer, 14 bottles of 1.5 litres fit upright in the box; lying down, even 17 fit. The bottles are not included. Four recessed drink holders in the lid stop bottles from tipping when you brake – a detail that is not standard in this price class.
A rust-free channel drain lets condensation run out of the outer compartment without you having to tip the box over. Practical, but buried in the small print: you have to close the drain after transport.
UV protection – the Achilles heel at the beach
The biggest weakness of the Xtreme series is the missing UV protection. After several days in direct sun the light HDPE body visibly fades and the surface turns matt. This does not matter for seasonal use at home, but it does for regular beach use in the midday sun.
If you leave the box outside permanently, you should cover it. A neoprene sun cover costs 15 to 20 euros and noticeably extends its life.
Verdict
If you are after the most volume per pound, the Coleman Xtreme Wheeled 50QT is the right choice. For 78 to 100 euros you get 47 litres, wheels, a telescopic handle and an honest four days of insulation. The YETI Roadie 24 is the better buy if you want a box that can also sit visibly in the living room or the car without falling apart after three years – for roughly four times the price.
Verdict: the value-for-money winner of our test and a clear recommendation for anyone looking for a large cooler box under 100 euros.

The special features
Wheels and telescopic handle
Two large wheels and an extendable handle make 6.1 kg manageable on the way to the beach or a festival.
PU foam in body and lid
The insulation sits in the lid and all around the entire body – unlike many cheap boxes.
Lid doubles as a seat
The lid is rated for up to 113 kg and is often used as a seat at festivals.
Drain without tipping
The rust-free channel drain lets condensation run off while the box stays where it is.
Frequently asked questions about the Coleman Xtreme Wheeled 50QT
The manufacturer states up to four days. In practice, with a fully packed ice compartment the box is still comfortably in single-digit temperatures after 48 hours; after 96 hours it becomes noticeably warmer at the edges. For a camping weekend that is the right dimension – for a multi-day expedition it is not.
Yes. The hinge is designed as a fold-down side handle and suitable for placing the box on its side. The telescopic handle blocks the opening, so you should retract it before setting the box down.
At roughly two thirds of the filling height the manufacturer recommends 6 to 8 kg of ice cubes or 4 to 6 ice packs. What really matters is the seal: a loose lid voids the four-day figure faster than any wrong coolant.
No. Coleman does not specify UV protection for the Xtreme series. The light HDPE body fades after several days of direct sun. A sun cover for 15 to 20 euros solves the problem.
Amazon.de has no exact listing for this model (item number 2000037211). The box is sold through campingaz.de and specialist retailers; idealo lists around 30 offers, the cheapest at 78 euros.
