YETI Roadie 24 2.0 in our test
The YETI Roadie 24 2.0 is the most compact hard-shell cooler box in our test and the counterpart to the plastic boxes: the body is rotation-moulded and injected with PERMAFROST PU under high pressure, and the COLDLOCK gasket is designed for the freezer zone. With 24 litres and 5.9 kg it is the only box that also works as a drinks cooler. YETI grants a five-year warranty – a unique feature in this product class.
What makes a hard shell different
The difference between the Roadie 24 and a plastic box such as the Coleman Convoy is not just the material but the manufacturing process. YETI injects the polyurethane foam under high pressure directly into the hard shell – the PERMAFROST process. The result is an even insulation layer without voids that does not delaminate even after temperature changes. In plastic boxes the foam sits as a separate insert inside a thin wall.
That is why the YETI is the only box in our test that keeps its seal even in the freezer compartment: COLDLOCK is explicitly designed for the freezer zone. Anyone who stores the box in a car boot in winter and uses it again in summer is on the safe side.
24 litres that work as a drinks cooler
The Roadie 24 is the smallest YETI hard box, but the only one in our test that fulfils a dual purpose: as a drinks cooler for taking six beers or a case of water to the beach, 5.9 kg and a height of 42 cm is realistic; for a rucksack it is not.
YETI states 33 cans (330 ml), 11.8 kg of ice, or eight wine bottles / two 2-litre bottles upright. The INTERLOCK lid with QuickLatch keeps the closure secure even in a rucksack.
Price and availability
The price is the main reason the YETI loses in most comparisons: 221 € for 24 litres is a poor deal per litre compared with 150 euros for 66 litres in the Convoy. If you only compare, take the Convoy.
The maths works differently if you use the box regularly, want it on display or plan to resell it. Five years of warranty are unique in this class, and the limited colourway editions cost more again. If you care about aesthetics and longevity, this is the right box.
Verdict
The Roadie 24 is the best cooler box in our test when it comes to build quality and lifespan – and the most expensive. We recommend it for the car, boat, living room and every application where the box is also on display. For camping on hard-standing pitches the Convoy 65QT is the more economical argument, and under 100 euros the Xtreme Wheeled 50QT.

idealo's figures vary between 20 and 24 litres depending on the colour variant. YETI itself quotes 33 cans of 330 ml, 11.8 kg of ice or eight wine bottles. We have used the 24-litre figure as a conservative upper bound.
The price results from the hard shell, the PERMAFROST PU injection and manufacturing in the USA. Per litre it is considerably more expensive than a plastic box – the investment pays off over lifetime and warranty, not per litre.
Yes. The COLDLOCK gasket is designed for the freezer zone and PERMAFROST stays tight through temperature changes. After storage you should let the box thaw at room temperature and dry it out before using it again.
YETI states "several days" without giving a concrete number – unlike Coleman. On the basis of the PERMAFROST insulation it sits in practice at the level of the Convoy series and therefore clearly above the cheap boxes.
