Hydro Flask Wide Mouth 946 ml in our test
The Wide Mouth from Hydro Flask is the brand's standard product and the best-selling stainless steel drinking bottle in Europe: 946 millilitres of volume, 440 grams of weight, TempShield vacuum insulation with 24 hours of cold retention and twelve hours of heat retention. With over 21,000 Amazon reviews it is the best-documented product in our entire test. The Flex Cap is not included – the bottle is supplied with the Wide Mouth Base.
The classic with the best data
Over 21,000 Amazon reviews and 121 retailer offers make the Wide Mouth the best-documented product in our test. For comparison: the Stanley Quencher reaches around 7,800 reviews, the YETI Roadie 24 around 60. For a purchase decision that is not a detail – you can see whether and which points of criticism buyers name in large numbers.
The dimensions are strikingly inconsistent: idealo gives a height of 23 centimetres, Amazon 24.5, the manufacturer 27.94. We use the manufacturer figure because it gives the total height including the lid.
Wide Mouth is not a drinking opening
The name is the most important distinguishing feature: the 69-millimetre opening is wide enough that you can drop ice cubes straight in and rinse the bottle out completely. Drinking from it is less convenient, especially at a desk with lukewarm water.
The bottle is supplied with the Wide Mouth Base, a simple screw lid. The more convenient Flex Cap with carry loop is not included and costs around 36 euros. The Flex Straw Cap attachment also lies well above the price of the bottle itself. These accessory prices are the real sticking point in the Hydro Flask calculation.
Price comparison and promotions
idealo lists 121 offers between 21.94 and 97.90 €. The lower range is normal pricing, the upper consists of bundle offers with accessories and sets of two bottles. Hydro Flask itself is currently reducing the Wide Mouth to 31.47 € – with a lifetime warranty on the steel and insulation components.
The Wide Mouth is therefore cheaper than the fashionable brands despite the strong brand. If you can do without a straw and use the bottle in the office or on the move with the screw lid, the base lid gives you the cheapest high-quality stainless steel bottle in the test.
Verdict
The Hydro Flask Wide Mouth is our value-for-money winner among drinking bottles: 24 hours of cold retention, 440 grams, a lifetime warranty and the best price comparison in the test. There are compromises in drinking comfort – the wide-mouth lid and the missing straw require some getting used to.
If you need a straw, the Stanley Quencher is the quicker option; if you are looking for maximum shape stability and a distinctive design, the Owala.

Frequently asked questions about the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth 946 ml
The manufacturer states a height of 27.94 centimetres and a diameter of 9.02 centimetres, idealo comes to 23 centimetres. We have used the manufacturer figure because it gives the total height including the lid – the lower values presumably measure without the lid.
No. As standard the Wide Mouth comes with the Wide Mouth Base, a simple screw lid. The Flex Cap with carry loop and the Flex Straw Cap with straw are accessories and each cost around 36 euros – more than 100 per cent of the bottle price.
Hydro Flask states 24 hours of cold retention and 12 hours of heat retention. These values apply at room temperature with a pre-filled drink – actual retention depends heavily on the starting temperature and the surroundings.
The 21.94 € figure is the market price without accessories. The offers up to almost 98 € are almost exclusively bundles with a Flex Cap, straw or a second bottle. Judged on the bottle alone, you never pay 98 €.
Yes, Hydro Flask describes the bottle as dishwasher safe – in practice, hand washing with a brush around the wide-mouth rim is the easiest option.
